In this guide, we explain what is involved in keyword research and page tagging and why it is so important in search engine optimization.
Keyword Research
Selecting the correct keywords is essential in targeting the right traffic and increasing conversions to your site. There are three components:
- Research Tools: Use free and paid tools to gain insight through the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator, the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool, Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery, Trellian and Keyword Intelligence.
- The Research Process: What are the 10-15 keywords that best describe your business?
- Data Collection: How to find out how many people actually search for your chosen keywords. The best way to organize and track your top keywords.
Keyword Selection
Make sure you don’t commit common mistakes:
- Believing that search volume translates into good keywords
- Using terms that are too broad or general
- Using singular terms when the corresponding plural term has a higher keyword volume
- Using hyphenated terms when the corresponding non-hyphenated term has a higher keyword volume
- Fail to use geographic references if your business only operates in certain cities or regions
- Be careful when it comes to the misspellings of keywords. These can make your site and company appear less professional and you probably will not get high-quality traffic
After keyword research, you can begin the most important step in optimizing your Website: page tagging. We explain the SEO relevance of these tags:
- Keyword Tag: While the tag is mainly ignored now, it can help reinforce the terms you are using in your page copy.
- Title Tag: The title tag is the most vital piece of text on your Website. The title tag can be found in the browser title and tells not only search engines but also users exactly what they should expect to find on that page.
- Description Tag: The description tag is the second most important part of the meta tag. When a user searches for your keyword, the description tag is what shows up in the search results.
- Page Heading: This is one of the first things search engines read on your page and generally the first thing users see. The page heading has to be written for users but also to tell search engines exactly what they will find.
