Social media marketing sees big push into the holiday season
2009-11-03
Researchers and industry experts say that online marketing efforts will focus to an unprecedented degree on social networking this holiday season.Chris Bruzzo, vice president of brand, content, and online at Starbucks, told Blogging Stocks that the online marketing industry is far beyond where it was last year in terms of technology adoption, and the Blogging Stocks report concludes that this will be the first holiday season in which social media will play a major role in sales.
Nearly half of those surveyed by Shop.org plan to increase their media spend on social networking, according to Reuters. Innovative uses of social networking include Best Buy's Twelpforce, which uses Twitter to answer tech support questions, and will offer holiday gift advice this winter.
However, not all marketing experts are sold on the effectiveness of social networks. Zain Raj, chief executive of loyalty marketing firm Euro RSCG Discovery describes marketing over Twitter and Facebook as "a shiny new toy" that has not yet been able to "clearly prove that it can have a meaningful impact on sales for most companies or brands."
