Google adds new functions to streamline search results
2009-10-30
Though Google has dominated the search market for many years, recent months have seen competitors Microsoft and Yahoo slowly chipping away at the giant's market share. To that end, Google introduced earlier this month a new set of search tool that enable users to better focus and refine their search results. The new tools have been integrated into the existing sidebar box displayed with all sets of Google search results, which B2B SEO marketers should bear in mind. Searchers can filter their results for more or fewer shopping sites, pages that they have or have not already visited, news, blogs and books.
The search options panel has been around since this May, when Google rolled it out at an event dubbed "Searchology." "We want to help our users find more useful information, and do more useful things with it," wrote Marissa Mayer and Jack Menzel at that time on Google's official blog.
Some experts, like Michele Masterson at Channel Web, see the new features as responding to Microsoft's Bing advertisements that caricature the profusion of information that can result from a Google search.
