2010-04-30
Experian Hitwise announced earlier this week that the term "facebook" was the top organic search term in the U.S. in March. The term "ebay" was the top paid search term during the same period.Experian's results cover the top three search engines in the United States: Google, Yahoo, and Bing. "Facebook" was the top organic term, accounting for 1.17 percent of searches on Google, 1.70 percent of the searches on Yahoo, and 2.6 percent of searches on Bing. Facebook-related searches, such as "facebook login" and "facebook.com," took up eight of the top 10 spots across all three search engines.
Similarly, the search term "ebay" dominated paid searches. The top 10 paid searches were made up mainly by variances of "ebay", including "ebay auction" and "ebay.com." Ebay-related search terms made up more than 3 percent of paid search terms on Yahoo and Bing, though they made up just 1 percent on Google. Netflix, Verizon, and Home Depot-related searches filled in the rest.
In 2010, most businesses will be spending more on B2B search engine optimization. According a report from eConsultancy, more than $16 billion will be spent on search marketing in North America alone.
