Adult use of social networking expected to grow by 2013
2009-03-03
When many b2b marketers hear social networking they think of teens uploading pictures on Facebook. But a new study finds an increasing amount of adults are using the services.According to eMarketer, 79.5 million people in the U.S. - 41 percent of the online population - visited a social networking site at least once per month in 2008.
The site says that the growth exhibited over the last few years shows no signs of stopping, one of many reasons b2b marketers need to get on board.
eMarketer predicts that by 2013 the number of people visiting social networks at least once a month will jump to 114.6 million people, with the vast majority - 82 percent - being adults.
"The steady stream of updates and news will become a weekly or even daily habit for many people," says eMarketer. "That stickiness is good news for social network providers."
Although a number of studies in recent months show that b2b marketers intend on investing more money into online marketing techniques in 2009, not many are taking advantage of social media.
A recent report from Forrester Research finds that although 77 percent of b2b marketers say they personally use social networking, a majority do not think it can impact the purchasing process.
