Defining Link Metrics that Impact SEO Link Building Development

Written by Derek Edmond April 30th, 2012

As SEO becomes more involved in the marketing initiatives of the organization, search marketing professionals work in greater coordination with additional team members and departments. Last week our SEO team met with an organization’s marketing communications team. The goal being defining opportunities for outreach and understanding how we could assist in an effort to acquire high quality links.

Link Building
It is interesting how our teams use different metrics in evaluating opportunities, but still seek to provide similar outcomes. We all want our clients and organizations to receive quality traffic, provide visibility in appropriate markets, and drive measurable results (leads, visitors, etc). As the KoMarketing Associates’ team reflected on why we chose specific sites and publications for outreach, we discussed the following criteria leading to our recommendations for link acquisition.

Have infographics jumped the shark? While the popularity of infographics have certainly brought new players and in some respects, diluted overall quality, a well done visualization can still be incredibly powerful for brand awareness, traffic, and link building.

We are still seeing effective infographics drive thousands of new visitors, hundreds of links, and getting opportunities to network with influential site owners in our clients respective industries.

The search engine marketing industry is no exception. While certainly biased I feel professionals in our industry put together some of the most creative infographics, that tackle compelling concepts and reach out across social networks for maximum visibility.

Link building seems simple in principle but is difficult in practice. While even a new student of SEO understands the value in inbound links, being able to execute actual campaigns to acquire these links is another story.

5 SEO Communication Strategies That Should Not Be Automated

Written by Derek Edmond August 15th, 2011

After shopping for a car this past week, one of the sales people we met sent me a “thank you” email for stopping into the dealership. After reading the email, I realized it was an automated template, most likely auto-generated given the time it was received.

Assembly Line

In my opinion, “canned” messages and responses decrease the likelihood an informed (dare I say educated?) customer will buy or react. An automated reply can take away from a personal connection trying to be built and detract from the overall experience.

Written by Derek Edmond January 28th, 2011

Link building is not something the traditional B2B marketer thinks about on an everyday basis. Examining Your Link Building Strategy with Yahoo! Site Explorer

Written by Derek Edmond May 14th, 2010

Last week Laura Lippay wrote a post for the Yahoo Search Marketing Blog detailing how marketers can use Yahoo! Site Explorer for checking backlinks to their website(s).

I bookmarked the article because it’s a great tutorial on how to use Yahoo! Site Explorer (YSE) and identifies some of the not-so-visible benefits of registering your site with the search engine.

There is no question that YSE link reporting functions can be of tremendous value for marketers and site owners. However it is important to realize not all links listed will directly benefit a search engine optimization strategy.

8 Tips for Getting Site Owners to Open Your Link Building Requests

Written by Derek Edmond November 11th, 2009

Last week I attended a Business Wire event on green technology; geared towards entrepreneurs, ad agencies and PR folks. Among the four panelists were two reporters, an editor of an industry site, and an analyst covering the space. As the session turned to Q/A, the obligatory question on how members of the audience should pitch them was asked.

Interestingly enough, all four panelists indicated that email was the preferred method for receiving a pitch.
