Public Relations & Poker - How a Full House On the River Beat My Flush and Crushed My Dreams for 15 Seconds of Fame

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Last night I played in a charity poker tournament sponsored by PR Newswire and organized by PRSA Boston.

The event was fun and I met lots of great PR folks in the Boston area.  Last year’s event helped raise enough money to allow PRSA Boston to raise its scholarship grant from $1,000 to $2,000.

It was also fun to watch the side action based on a friendly rivalry between Schwartz Communications and Racepoint Group (both PR firms located in Waltham, MA).

Podcast - Online Marketing for Manufacturing Companies

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Yesterday I was interviewed for a podcast by Ken Rayment from Better Process Podcast.  The title of the Podcast is Industry Report Andy Komack Komarketing Associates (has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?).  The “industry” referenced here is small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in the U.S.

Ken, a manufacturing engineer with a Six Sigma Black Belt, asked to interview me after reading the How Strong is Your Brand Online? article in IndustryWeek.com.

The Podcast focuses on how manufacturing companies can leverage online marketing techniques to remain competitive (both in the U.S. and abroad).

We covered themes such as:

Andy and I are excited to be a part of SEMPO’s hybrid training concept, which blends the material from their online course “Insider’s Guide to Search Marketing” with a one day class at Bentley College’s Center for Marketing Technology in Waltham, MA.

Our goal is to provide a complementary experience to the material found in the SEMPO course through the use of real world examples, applications and an overview of core concepts. In addition, hands-on exercises have been created to give beginners practical recommendations for applying ideas found in the course into their own search marketing campaigns.

7 Things I Didn’t Get Out of SMX Social Media and 2 Important Things That I Did

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Heading from NYC last night, I started thinking about what I would tell the rest of my colleagues as it relates to how and what was learned from SMX Social Media.

Well here are some things that didn’t happen:

  • I still don’t feel comfortable adding Danny Sullivan or Neil Patel to my Facebook network.
  • No one gave me the social media “quick fix” idea that I thought would be worth risking my profile or IP getting banned in respective communities.

Traditional vs Search Marketing - BIMA Cross Media Forum

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

I attended the BIMA 3rd Annual Cross Media Forum yesterday where people specializing in various channels of marketing came together to discuss media integration.

The forum was mainly geared toward large companies who use several different agencies to handle their print, television and online campaigns, and how they are able to overcome the obstacles that may be involved in working with a variety of platforms. The panelists discussed everything from brainstorming an idea to campaign execution to using metrics when measuring success.

Top 8 Things You Didn’t Learn if You Missed OMS: Boston

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

I recently attended the Online Marketing Summit: Boston, where marketers from all over Massachusetts met up to learn and discuss the newest trends in online marketing (and new spins on some older trends). This was my first summit/conference/etc, so I won’t lie to you; I was a little bit nervous. Having no idea what to expect, who to expect, or if having expectations was at all necessary; off I went. Here are the top 8 things that I learned from this event.

Wrapping Up The Google Adwords PPC Seminar in Boston

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Joe and I were lucky enough to attend the Google Adwords Seminar in Boston last week, lead by industry expert Brad Geddes. The seminar, an all-day event held in locations across North America, incorporated detailed overviews, tutorials and tips for using all facets of the Google Adwords interface. Here are a few ideas and concepts to consider when managing your Google Adwords PPC campaign:

  • Consider the types of searches that a user will query when looking to address a problem in search. For example:
    • Are they searching for industry specific information, company names or band names? (”Boston Plumbing Company”)
