15 Traits of an SEO Nerd

August 1, 2007: Derek’s post from a few days ago reminded me of the first time I realized I was an SEO nerd. I had been working at a search marketing firm for about five months when one of my teammates called me over:

Steve: “Hey look what I found” (shows me website with about 700 lines of hidden keywords on the page)

Me: “Woah Cool!”……..”Crap. I can’t believe I just said that.”

I was a little saddened at first. I had never thought of myself as a nerd. I mean, I’m nothing like Screech! But then I started thinking and realized that I wasn’t really a nerd, I was just an SEO nerd and I was perfectly okay with that.

So what exactly is an SEO nerd? Well, let’s just say that if you laugh at any of the following…you are probably one yourself:

1.) You say or hear “Google” over 200 times a day and somehow aren’t sick of it.

2.) You use acronyms on a daily basis and you actually know what these mean – SES, SEO, PPC, CPM, CPC, SMX, SEM, ODP, SMM, ROA.

3.) Your friend uses your computer to search for something. You are slightly confused and amazed when they open Internet Explorer.

4.) It is perfectly acceptable to take advice from people with names like Graywolf, Randfish, Stuntdubl and rustybrick.

5.) Someone uses the term ‘Grease monkey’ to describe their mechanic and you immediately think of that smiling monkey face in the bottom of your browser window.

6.) You have an excel spreadsheet containing logins and passwords for 37 different sites…and those are just the ones you have signed up for.

7.) The following t-shirt slogans are funny – even at age 35: “Sometimes when I am alone I google myself” – “I facebooked your mom” – “YouTube Myspace and I’ll Google Your Yahoo”.

8.) You get excited for holidays just so you can see all the new logos…and then you blog about them.

9.) You can’t visit a site without critiquing it…”ha-ha-ha flash…good luck with that”. “No 404 custom error page? Loser” “Blinking graphic? Hello 1997″.

10.) Your friends and family have absolutely no idea what you do. They think you either work for Google, run a porn site or send email spam.

11.) Watching other people search is ‘neat’ to you.

12.) You check your RSS reader not once, not twice, but 15 times a day just to make sure you aren’t missing any important news.

13.) Stumble, Digg, Reddit, Furl, Fark, Scoop, Seed and Twit are things you do..and that doesn’t seem weird.

14.) Even though you use the darn thing, you still can’t figure out where the periods go in Delicious. De.lici.ous? Deli.cio.us? Oh right, Del.icio.us!

15.) The first time you made the front page of Digg was cause for celebration! Woo Hoo!

I know there are a lot more. When did you realize that you too were an SEO nerd?

When I read this list ;)

    #7 – lol!!!

Reminds me of when I’d been dating a coworker at a past SEO agency. Left her a post-it that said “Does my Google Excite your Yahoo?”

    {“Excite”… this was circa 2001, ahhh the golden years}

hhaha. Guess you guys are nerds too!

Great Post! I’ve been working in the SEO worlds for almost 3 months and I’m already a nerd!
When my friends say they just stumbled upon this video or news article online I get excited.

“I didn’t know you use stumbleupon???”
    they say “umm… what?”

At least “dig” is no longer a popular turn-of-phrase :-P

Number 10 is SO true! I don’t know how many times I have had to explain to people that I don’t make popups or email spam. They are always hesitant to believe me. I guess it’s clear that SOMEONE is making them… and the blame might as well be put on my door.

Number 7 also made me laugh. Thanks!

    Ah ah, funny.

I’m afraid I recognized some traits in my case… ^^

Great post. #10 is so true, and even after explaining what I do to family members, I’ll still be dubbed as the son who “works with computers, I dunno!”.

  • http://www.forwardslashmarketing.co.uk Gidseo

I’ve got to take issue with #3 no SEO worth his salt would use IE. Firefox is the only choice of browser.
Guilty as charged on all other fronts!
    #11 hit a particular chord…

  • ipodwheels

    Hahahahaha, this is so true.

  • http://www.komarketingassociates.com/blog casie

I agree GidSEO…it’s usually my non-seo friends using IE.

  • http://www.closed-loop-marketing.com SandraNiehaus

Laughed my ass off, thanks! Loved #3 – you mean there are other browsers besides Firefox?

#10 really struck a chord with me, too. I’ve boiled down my “simple” job description to “I help people improve their web sites” and still get blank stares and “Oh, you mean computer stuff. Can’t stand computers, myself.”

You hit the nail on the head! :)

  • http://boostengine.com Sam

#16 – Your friend does a search in your browser and is bewildered by all the crossed out links (no-follows), numbers next to search results (seoquake!), and other oddities. “What’s wrong with your Internet, dude?”

    #3 – lol!!!!!! – I stand amazed everytime :)

ha ha – and Sam has it right – my network admin tried to blame my slow internet on my seoquake yesterday, ignoring the fact that our network, well, blows everyday ;)

  • http://www.maxthon.com Vincent

    Gidseo and Sandra: other browsers!!???
you mean you guys are still using firefox? this is so 2001!

    :)

    Vincent (very happy Maxthon user)

The day I actually told a guy upon being asked if I was an expensive gift girl or a thoughtful gift girl and I replied with, “I’m like a link, much better results if you get me organically.” – oh, yes, I did.
